NBDE PART 2 EXAMINATION CONTENT
Scope of the Examination
What is the NBDE part II?
The NBDE part II is the second portion of the National Board Dental Exam, usually taken during or just before the dental students final year of dental school. Along with part I of the NBDE and your state or regional licensing exam, this exam helps to satisfy the licensing requirements to become a dentist. For more info on the exam and how to sign up to take it, visit the ADA’s NBDE part II webpage.
How long is the NBDE part II exam?
The test is a two day exam. The first day consists of 7 hours of testing with an optional 1 hour lunch break. The first day is broken up into two, 3.5 hour segments each covering 200 questions. The second day is a single 3.5 hour session covering 100 patient case problems.
What subjects are tested on part II of the NBDE?
The first day cosnsist of 400 discipline-based questions. The discipline’s tested include the following: Operative Dentistry, Pharmacology, Prosthodontics, Oral and Mixillofacial Surgery / Pain Control, Orthodontics, Pediatric Dentistry, Endodontics, Periodontics, Oral Diagnosis, and Patient Management. Also, about 30% of the questions will relate to the basic sciences.
The second day of the test consists of 100 case-based questions. 70% of the case-based questions with be related to adults and 30% related to children, while at least 15% of these case questions will involve compromised adults or children. Each case will come with a patient’s medical and social histories, dental charting, radiographs and possibly photographs of the patient. 10 to 15 questions will accompany each case and will involve the treatment of the patient.
How do I prepare for part II of the NBDE?
The exam covers most of the material you learn in dental school so make sure you spend plenty of time preparing. You should begin preparing for the exam a few months before the exam. I suggest getting some NBDE study guides to help prepare — I recommend getting the Dental Decks and also a copy of either Mosby’s Review for the NBDE part II, Rudman’s National Dental Board Part II, or First Aid for the NBDE part II. Another good guide to consider the kaplan book and Q bank for further preparation. You also should get copies of old released exam to take a few practice tests prior to your exam so you know what to expect.
The NBDE Part II is a comprehensive examination consisting of 500 multiple-choice test items.
The discipline-based component includes 400 items derived from the following disciplines:
1. Endodontics 2. Operative Dentistry 3. Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery/Pain Control 4. Oral Diagnosis 5. Orthodontics/Pediatric Dentistry 6. Patient Management, including Behavioral Science/Dental Public Health &Occupational Safety.7. Periodontics 8. Pharmacology 9. Prosthodontics The case-based component consists of 100 items based on 8 – 10 case
problems dealing with patients.
The patient cases are developed to include the following approximate distribution:
Adults–70%, Children–30%. A minimum of 15% of Component B test questions
will address the medical management of compromised adults and children. A
compromised patient is defined as a
person whose health status requires modification of standard treatment
Each case presentation in the examination may consist of: 1. A synopsis of a patient's health and social histories, 2. The patient's dental charting, 3. Radiographs, and 4. Photographs of the patient (when relevant). Each case is comprised of 10 to 15 questions about various aspects of the patient'sdental care. These questions might derive from any of the basic sciences and clinicaldisciplines. The nature of the case itself determines the proportion of items forany particular discipline.
In responding to case-based items, the candidate must:
1. Interpret the findings and information provided. 2. Identify the problems and make diagnoses. 3. Select materials, technique, and armamentarium. 4. Apply treatment. 5. Evaluate progress and complications. 6. Establish procedures for prevention and maintenance.
Examination items are selected by test construction committees composed of subject-matter
experts in accordance with examination specifications approved by the JCNDE.
The American Dental Association Universal/National tooth notation system is used on all
National Board Dental and Dental Hygiene Examinations. This system is a sequential tooth
numbering system, designating the permanent dentition with numbers 1-32, and the primary
dentition with letters A-T.
Sample Item Formats
A multiple-choice examination item consists of a stem, which poses a problem,
followed by a list of possible answers.
The stem of a test item is usually either a question or an
incomplete statement. For NBDE use, an item must have at least three and not
more than five possible responses. Only one of the responses listed is considered
either correct or best option.
Some samples of examination item formats are:
Completion: Completion-type items require
the correct completion of a concept or idea.
The area of the tooth that is the most sensitive to cavitypreparation is the A. dentin. B. enamel. C. cementum. D. cementoenamel junction. E. dentoenamel junction.
Which of the following has the potential for undergoingspontaneous malignant transformation?A. Osteomalacia B. Albright's syndrome C. Paget's disease of bone D. Osteogenesis imperfecta E. von Recklinghausen disease of bone
Negative: A negative item is characterized by a word such as EXCEPT or

Paired True-False: The only portion of a paired true-false examination item
that variesis the stem. The stem consists of two sentences on the same topic.
In health, bone is constantly undergoing resorption and formation. In periodontitis, only bone resorption occurs. A. Both statements are true. B. Both statements are false. C. The first statement is true, the second is false. D. The first statement is false, the second is true.
Cause-and-Effect: The only portion of a cause-and-effect test item
that varies is the stem. The stem consists of a statement and a reason.
These are written as a single sentence andare connected by because.
A traumatic injury can cause the pulp space to calcify, because the accident cantrigger odontoclasts into accelerated activity.A. Both the statement and the reason are correct and related. B. Both the statement and the reason are correct but NOT related. C. The statement is correct, but the reason is NOT. D. The statement is NOT correct, but the reason is correct. E. NEITHER the statement NOR the reason is correct.
Tutorial
A tutorial is available at www.ADA.org to familiarize you with the mechanics of
taking the computer-based NBDE Part II. The tutorial does NOT include sample
National Board content, but it does provide the opportunity to become familiar with
the basic computer steps involved in proceeding through the examination.
At the Prometric Test Center, you will be able to become familiar with the
workings of the computer by taking a brief optional tutorial before beginning
the actual examination. Additionally, you may become familiar with the testing
experience through Prometric's Test Drive. In 30 minutes, you will experience
an overview of the testing experience you will encounter on the actual
testing day. During the overview, you may participate in:
• The scheduling and registration process • The complete check-in process • Introduction to test center staff and surroundings • A live 15-minute sample test (generic test not a sample NBDE Part I) demonstrating the
testing process • Full preparation for the real tes
